Pope Francis has died aged 88, the Vatican Press Office has confirmed. He served as the 265th successor of St Peter from his election on 13 March 2013 to 21 April 2025.

At 9:45am, Rome time, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the death of Pope Francis from the Casa Santa Marta with these words:

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and True God.”

Eternal Father,

in Your loving mercy,

You gave the Church a shepherd in Pope Francis—

humble servant, courageous prophet,

and tireless pilgrim of hope.

Now that his earthly journey is complete,

we commend his soul into Your hands,

trusting in Your boundless mercy and the promise of eternal life.

O Mary, Queen of Palestine,

Mother of the Church and Star of Hope,

receive your devoted son into your maternal embrace.

You who walked the land made holy by your Son,

walk now with Francis into the Father’s house.

Console your children who mourn his passing,

and intercede for the Church he loved and served.

May the light of Christ, which he bore with joy,

shine ever brighter through the witness of those

inspired by his compassion, simplicity, and faith.

Grant him eternal rest, O Lord,

and let perpetual light shine upon him.

May he rest in peace,
